Catbells is an extremely popular fell with its easy trails and beautiful views across the lake, and is many walker’s first ‘Wainwright’. It is just a short ferry ride across Derwentwater from Keswick or can be reached on foot by walking through the town. At around 451 metres (1,480 feet) high, it’s not as daunting as many of the surrounding fells, but still offers rewarding and panoramic views over Derwentwater and the surrounding valleys. The ascent can be steep in places, yet it’s manageable, and the well-defined path makes it relatively straightforward navigation-wise, even for beginners. The total walk time averages between 3 to 5 hours, depending on pace and rest breaks, making it an ideal day trip. It’s a wonderful and engaging way to introduce children to hill walking and the great outdoors.
