If you’re looking for a unique cycling experience, then try tackling this popular, but challenging loop from Keswick. Start off alongside Derwentwater and enjoy the views over the lake before heading up Borrowdale and the steep slopes of Honister Pass, continue on to tackle Newlands and Whinlatter before arriving back in Keswick.

If you’re an experienced cyclist looking for a challenge, you’ll find Keswick the perfect starting point for several iconic routes and climbs. One of our favourite rides is the 36km loop ride involving Whinlatter Pass and Newlands Pass. Whinlatter Pass, featured on the Tour of Britain and offers an ahem ‘invigorating’ climb through the picturesque Whinlatter Forest. Newlands Pass is demanding but the breath-taking views are rewarding. Another must-ride is the spectacular Honister Pass, nominated by Simon Warren as one of his “100 Greatest Cycling Climbs” for its steep gradients and stunning vistas of Borrowdale valley. A good loop is to start out alongside Derwentwater and enjoy the views over the lake before heading up Borrowdale and the brutal slopes of Honister Pass. After the technically challenging descent it’s on to tackle Newlands and Whinlatter before arriving back in Keswick. Ask us if you want maps or GPX files. Further afield, yet still within reach on a decent day ride is the brutally steep Hardknott Pass. Situated in the Western Lakes, it’s one of England’s most challenging climbs and was part of the 2013 Tour of Britain. These routes are physically challenging but will you reward with some of the most stunning landscapes in the United Kingdom.
